FAQ
Common questions about tenant moves.
What does a Microsoft 365 tenant-to-tenant migration consultant do?
A Microsoft 365 tenant-to-tenant migration consultant moves an entire workforce from one M365 tenant identity to another with zero data loss and minimal downtime — typically driven by M&A integration (folding an acquired tenant into the parent's), divestiture (carving a business unit into its own tenant), rebranding, or compliance separation. Scope: every mailbox with full mail item, calendar, contacts, and rule fidelity; OneDrive content with permissions; SharePoint sites, libraries, and lists; Teams chats, channels, files, and meetings; Power Platform apps and flows where in scope; group-based licensing remap; Entra ID sync alignment; DNS cutover with zero email loss. Tooling chosen per workload (ShareGate, BitTitan MigrationWiz, Quest On Demand, CodeTwo, native Migration Manager) — vendor-neutral, no resale.
How long does a tenant-to-tenant Microsoft 365 migration take?
Mid-market moves of 200–1,000 users typically run 6–12 weeks end to end: 1–3 weeks discovery, 1–2 weeks pilot, 2–6 weeks cutover, 2 weeks hypercare. Larger or more complex tenants extend the cutover phase, not the methodology.
Do Teams chats and SharePoint sites migrate?
Yes. Teams private chats migrate via Microsoft's native API or supported third-party tooling. Channels, files, and SharePoint sites move with permissions intact. Power Automate flows and Power BI workspaces are handled when explicitly in scope.
Can users keep their existing email addresses after a tenant move?
Yes when the same custom domain follows the users to the destination tenant. We coordinate the domain detach / attach window so mail flow stays continuous. Cutover address forwarders cover the deprecated domain when applicable.
What migration tooling do you use for tenant-to-tenant?
Tooling is picked per workload, not per vendor relationship. ShareGate, BitTitan MigrationWiz, Quest On Demand, CodeTwo, and native Microsoft 365 Migration Manager are all viable. We don't resell any of them, so the recommendation reflects fit, not margin.
