Service detail

When Hyper-V is the right VMware exit

If you already run Windows Server Datacenter, you've already paid for Hyper-V. The right destination for Microsoft-stack shops is often the one you've owned all along — we just have to get there cleanly.

Why Hyper-V often wins

  • Already licensed if you run Windows Server Datacenter
  • Native integration with AD, System Center, Defender, Azure Arc
  • No additional training overhead for Microsoft-stack teams
  • Failover Clustering and Storage Spaces Direct mature and proven
  • Live migration, replica, shielded VMs, and VBS supported out of the box
  • First-class Azure connectivity for hybrid scenarios

What's in scope

  • Workload assessment with dependency mapping
  • Hyper-V host design (compute, storage, networking)
  • Failover cluster build with quorum and storage
  • VM conversion using Azure Migrate, Veeam, or native tools
  • Network reconfiguration for the Hyper-V virtual switch model
  • Backup and replication retooling
  • Old VMware environment decommission

What you get

  • Conversion runbook with rollback plan per workload
  • Pilot conversion of representative workloads first
  • Documented Hyper-V architecture in your knowledge base
  • Operations handoff to your team or to our managed-support lane
  • Two weeks of hypercare post-cutover

FAQ

Common questions about Hyper-V migration.

What does a VMware to Hyper-V migration consultant do?

A VMware to Hyper-V migration consultant assesses an existing VMware vSphere estate and moves the workloads to Microsoft Hyper-V — design of the Hyper-V host architecture, Failover Clustering and Storage Spaces Direct (S2D) build, VM conversion using Azure Migrate / Veeam / native tooling, network reconfiguration for the Hyper-V virtual switch model, backup retooling, parallel-run validation, waved cutover, two weeks of hypercare, and the old vSphere environment decommission. The deliverable is a written migration runbook with rollback procedures per wave and operational handoff to the customer's team.

Why migrate from VMware to Hyper-V instead of Nutanix or Azure?

Hyper-V often wins for Microsoft-stack shops on license math: if you're already running Windows Server Datacenter, Hyper-V is included at no additional cost. Native AD, Defender, System Center, and Azure Arc integration eliminates the operational double-up most non-Microsoft hypervisors require. We don't push Hyper-V universally — we recommend it where it lands cleanly for your workloads and operating model.

How long does a VMware to Hyper-V migration take?

For a 50–200 VM environment: 8–14 weeks including assessment, host build, pilot conversion, wave-based migration, and two weeks of hypercare. Larger environments scale primarily on the cutover phase. The methodology is identical: discover, pilot, cutover, hypercare.

What about VMware-specific features like vSAN, NSX, and DRS?

Hyper-V equivalents: Storage Spaces Direct (S2D) replaces vSAN, Hyper-V Network Virtualization or third-party SDN (Cisco ACI, etc.) replaces NSX, and Failover Clustering with Performance and Resource Optimization replaces DRS. Not every feature has a 1:1 parity — workload assessment surfaces the gaps and the workarounds before migration starts.

Do we need new hardware?

Not always. Existing VMware hardware on the Microsoft Hardware Compatibility List (HCL) often runs Hyper-V cleanly after a wipe-and-reload. Workload assessment confirms HCL compliance, validates firmware levels, and identifies any storage controllers or NICs that need replacement.
